The Brahmi Script is the earliest writing system developed in India after the Indus script. It is one of the most influential writing systems; all modern Indian scripts and several hundred scripts found in Southeast and East Asia are derived from Brahmi.
Rather than representing individual consonant (C) and vowel (V) sounds, its basic writing units represent syllables of various kinds (e.g. CV, CCV, CCCV, CVC, VC). Scripts that operate on this basis are normally classified as syllabic, but because the V and C component of Brahmi symbols are clearly distinguishable, it is classified as an alpha-syllabic writing system.
Origin of the Brahmi Script
One question about the origin of the Brahmi script relates to whether this system derived from another script or it was an indigenous invention. In the late 19th century CE, Georg Bühler advanced the idea that Brahmi was derived from the Semitic script and adapted by the Brahman scholars to suit the phonetic of Sanskrit and Prakrit. India became exposed to Semitic writing during the 6th century BCE when the Persian Achaemenid Empire took control of the Indus Valley (part of present-day Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northwestern India). Aramaic was the language of ancient Persian government administration, and official records were written using a North Semitic script.

Around this time, another script also developed in the region, known as Kharosthi, which remained dominant in the Indus Valley region, while the Brahmi script was employed in the rest of India and other parts of South Asia. Although we are confident that Kharosthi is an adaptation of Semitic, the connection between Brahmi and Semitic remains unclear.
By the 2nd century BCE, the Brahmi script becomes more widespread & we can also detect the rise of marked regional variations.
Another position has been advanced by professor K. Rajan, who has argued that the precursor of the Brahmi script is a system of symbols found on graffiti marks located on several sites in Tamil-Nadu (South India). In this region, hundreds of graffiti either inscribed or carved on potsherds and rock have been found: some of these symbols are found at the end of Brahmi inscriptions. Dilip Chakrabarti supports the connection between graffiti marks and Brahmi based on evidence found at Vallam (South India), where only graffiti inscriptions were present in the earliest phase, followed by a mix of graffiti and Brahmi script in the middle phases, and only Brahmi inscriptions in the latest periods. A similar picture has been produced by excavations at Mangudi. Whether Brahmi truly derives from graffiti is hard to confirm but the connection between the two systems cannot be ruled out.
There is a third position that claims that Brahmi derives from the Indus script, a writing system employed in the Indus Civilization which fell out of use as this civilization came to an end. Those who support this hypothesis point out the resemblance between some of the signs of these scripts. Given the complete absence of material evidence linking both writing systems, this view seems both speculative and hard to verify.

Another question about the origin of the Brahmi script relates to its antiquity. Until a few decades ago, the earliest securely dated examples available of the Brahmi script dated back to the 3rd century BCE, during the time when India was ruled by the Mauryan Empire. These examples were found on a set of royal rock inscriptions spread in North and Central India by the Indian emperor Ashoka (r. 268 BCE to 232 BCE), known as the Edicts of Ashoka or Ashokan Inscriptions.
Despite the lack of earlier examples, some scholars argued that the Brahmi script had originated earlier than the 3rd century BCE. This claim is based on the composition of a set of texts, the Brahmanas, which were attached to the Vedic literature during the 6th century BCE. The Brahmanas are the only section of the Vedic corpus written mostly in prose, unlike the earlier sections of the Vedas which are hymns for recitation, specially designed for oral transmission. The emergence of prose is hard to imagine without the support of writing technology. Further evidence comes from the work of Panini, the renowned ancient Indian grammarian who composed an influential work on grammar analysis of Sanskrit during the 5th or 4th century BCE. It is unlikely that a work like this could have been produced in a preliterate context. Knowledge of writing in India is also recorded by writers who joined Alexander the Great to India roughly a century before the time of Ashoka.

During the late 20th century CE, the notion that Brahmi originated before the 3rd century BCE gained strength when archaeologists working at Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka retrieved Brahmi inscriptions on pottery belonging to the 450-350 BCE period. The earliest of these examples are single letters, and their dates have been established through radiocarbon dating. The language of these inscriptions is North Indian Prakrit (Middle Indic), an Indo-Aryan language.
Development of the Brahmi Script
Most examples of Brahmi found in North and Central India represent the Prakrit language. The Ashokan Inscriptions already show some slight regional variations on the Brahmi script. In South India, particularly in Tamil-Nadu, Brahmi inscriptions represent Tamil, a language belonging to the Dravidian language family, with no linguistic affiliation to the Indo-Aryan languages such as Sanskrit or Prakrit.

Some Tamil examples come from inscribed potsherds found at Uraiyur (South India) dating to the 1st century BCE or the 1st century CE. In Arikamedu (South India) there is also evidence of an early form of Tamil in Brahmi inscriptions, dated to the early centuries CE. At this stage, different Brahmi characters specially adapted to suit Tamil phonetic were already in use. Examples of Tamil have not been identified among the earliest securely dated examples of Brahmi found at Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka, where the language represented is Prakrit.
By the 2nd century BCE, the Brahmi script becomes more widespread, and we can also detect the rise of marked regional variations.
Material Form & Use
Ashokan inscriptions are found on carved rocks, caves, stones slabs, and rock pillars. We also have some examples of short Brahmi inscriptions on small seals made of ivory, bone, stone, and terracotta dated to Mauryan times. Other examples come from potsherds and copper plates. With the rise of Buddhism as the dominant faith in India, we find Brahmi inscriptions on monumental constructions known as 'donative records,' stating the names of different donors. The early 2nd century BCE saw the beginning of Brahmi inscriptions on coins.
The earliest identifiable use of Brahmi script found on ceramic surfaces was to indicate ownership of the item.
The use of perishable materials as a writing medium is an ancient widespread practice in South Asia, particularly palm leaf and birch bark. As portable and affordable writing surfaces, these materials are ideal. Direct material evidence on the use of palm leaf and birch before the time of the Ashokan Inscriptions has not been found. This lack of direct evidence could have more to do with the bias of the archaeological record due to the destruction of evidence over time rather than the actual absence of a written tradition on perishable materials. Indirect evidence of the possible use of perishable writing surfaces has been retrieved at Sringaverapura in North India in the form of traces of birch wood, from levels dated to c. 10th to 7th century BCE period. D. Chakrabarti also mentions the presence of bone items described as possible stylus employed for writing on palm leaves and birch bark, but these objects could also have been arrows.
The earliest identifiable use of Brahmi script found on ceramic surfaces was to indicate ownership of the item. Towards the mid-3rd century BCE, we see the first example of Brahmi being used for official communication in the production of seals and on the Ashokan Inscriptions. A few centuries later, Brahmi begins to be employed in religious contexts, both in architecture and for the transmission of religious texts.

Scripts Derived From Brahmi
During its long history of development, there has been a large number of scripts derived from Brahmi. Many of the scripts derived from Brahmi have been adapted to suit the phonetic of several different languages, deriving in many script variations. The origin of numerous writing systems currently in use across Asia including the Gurmukhi, Kanarese, Sinhalese, Telugu, Thai, Tibetan, Javanese, and several others can be traced back to the Brahmi script.

Brāhmī Alphabet
The Brāhmī alphabet is the ancestor of most of the 40 or so modern Indian alphabets, and of a number of other alphabets, such as Khmer and Tibetan. It is thought to have been modelled on the Aramaic or Phoenician alphabets, and appeared in India sometime before 500 BC. Another theory is that Brāhmī developed from the Indus or Harappa script, which was used in the Indus valley until about 2,000 BC.
The earliest known inscriptions in the Brāhmī alphabet are those of King Asoka (c.270-232 BC), third monarch of the Mauryan dynasty.
Brāhmī was used to write a variety of languages, including Sanskrit and Prakrit.

Raamesh Gowri Raghavan first encountered the Brahmi script back in the 1990s. “These were Ashokan inscriptions,” says the Mumbai-based writer, epigraphist, digital marketer and scientist. Wanting to read the inscriptions, he taught himself to read Brahmi, India’s oldest deciphered script.

“The Brahmi script is the originator of all Indian scripts except Kharosthi, which was used in the region known as Gandhara,” says Raamesh, who will be conducting an online course on reading and writing Brahmi in association with INTACH Bengaluru between July 22 and 25.
“Since it is for the Bengaluru chapter of INTACH, this course will focus mainly on South India, addressing the evolution of the Brahmi script from its beginnings to its current status in the region,” he says.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to read and write Brahmi and also understand how the Kannada script developed from it, adds Raamesh, who serves as the director of the School of Languages at the India Study Centre (INSTUCEN) Trust.

The mystery of Brahmi
The earliest known Brahmi inscriptions are from the edicts of Ashoka, the third Mauryan emperor of Magadha who ruled most of the sub-continent between 268 and 232 BCE. The emperor, who converted to Buddhism, left a vast corpus behind in Brahmi, documenting his perspectives on dhamma, ideas of governance, and efforts to spread Buddhism.
“The Ashoka edicts are the most uncontroversially-dated inscriptions on which Brahmi is found,” says Raamesh. Traces of the script have been discovered not just in the Gangetic plains but also in excavated sites in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Sri Lanka, mostly on pottery shards. “Sometimes, it is very tantalising to believe that it could have originated in south India, earlier than Ashoka. But that is very controversial,” says Raamesh, adding that there is no way to date this script firmly.
Four theories on origin of Brahmi
The origins of Brahmi are equally indeterminate. There are at least four competing theories to explain where the script came from. The first is that it evolved from the yet-to-be-deciphered script of the Indus Valley Civilisation. “We cannot prove or disprove this theory unless we know that script better,” states Raamesh.
The second theory is that the script is a derivative of the Semitic Aramaic script, which, in turn, came from the Phoenician script. “The main evidence is the similarities in the shapes of several characters and the sounds they represent. But the evidence is weak,” he says.
While Brahmi belongs to what is called an abugida writing system, where consonants and vowels are written together as a unit (the matras or vowel diacritic used in languages like Hindi), the Phoenician and Aramaic systems are abjads or consonantal alphabets, in which only consonants are represented, with vowels needing to be inferred by the reader. “Brahmi is a very unique writing system, and there is reason to believe that it doesn’t really come from the Phoenician system,” he postulates.
The third hypothesis is that Brahmi was invented independently in Ashoka’s court.
The fourth is that it may have come from the mysterious megalithic graffiti marks found at many sites in south India, often on pottery shards. “It could have evolved from those as well, but again, there is so little available,” says Raamesh. “The jury is still out on the origins of Brahmi.”

The beginning of everything
One thing appears to be fairly certain, though. Brahmi is the mother script for nearly all Indian scripts, including Kannada, which is both a language and a script.
“Kannada is one of the classical languages, one of great antiquity that had been around for at least 2,000 years,” says Raamesh. The spoken language, which belongs to the Dravidian family, evolved over four stages — proto-Kannada, old Kannada, medieval Kannada and modern Kannada.
The script, on the other hand, can be roughly divided into three periods.
“The old Brahmi scripts evolved into the Hale Kannada script, which, in turn, evolved into the modern Kannada script,” says Raamesh. Hale Kannada, he adds, is the ancestor of both modern Kannada and Telugu.
The evolution of the old Brahmi script into multiple other scripts, he says, was partly affected by the material on which it was written. Since most documents were written on palm leaves in south India, the scripts that evolved from Brahmi were more rounded and cursive. “Palm leaves don’t tolerate straight lines,” he explains.
On the other hand, in north India, people preferred writing on birch bark, which allowed more angular writing. “That is why the northern Indian scripts have straight lines,” explains Raamesh.
Also, in the absence of a printing press, writing was passed on from teacher to student, generation after generation. “As handwriting changed, the script also changed,” he says.
The modern Kannada script, for instance, looks nothing like ancient Brahmi, even though the Kannada script descended from it. Similarly, modern Devanagari (used to write languages like Sanskrit and Hindi), Punjabi or Bengali scripts look nothing like the ancestral Brahmi script, says Raamesh. “Over time, the original shapes and the memory of those original shapes were lost, and the inscriptions left behind of those times were forgotten.”
Deciphering Brahmi
Brahmi faded from use in the centuries after Ashoka, and was completely forgotten. Cut to the 14th century CE. During one of his campaigns, Sultan Firuz Shah Tughlaq, who ruled over the Sultanate of Delhi between 1351 and 1388, stumbled across inscribed Ashoka pillars at Topra near Ambala, and another near Meerut.
“They were brought from their regular location to his capital,” recounts Raamesh, adding that the sultan was curious about what was written on those pillars. “It is said that he tried to get pundits to read those, and they had no clue. This was abandoned as a project for a long time.”
Brahmi was finally deciphered in the 19th century by the English scholar James Prinsep, the secretary of the Asiatic Society of Bengal and the editor of its journal. It wasn’t a dramatic process, like how Egyptian hieroglyphs were deciphered using the Rosetta Stone, says Raamesh. As the editor of the journal, he kept hearing from various people about inscriptions that they had seen in other places, drawings of coins and so on from across the country.
Archaeology, back then, wasn’t a subject the way it is today, “but people studying history and antiquity would often record these things and get them published in the journal of the Asiatic society.” As editor, he also had access to the journal’s back issues, narrates Raamesh.
A few years earlier, somebody had managed to read and decipher medieval Bengali inscriptions, a proto-Bengali, which were slightly different from the Bengali of that time. Another scholar, using this material, was able to read slightly older inscriptions and so on. Soon, they kept going back in time until they could read inscriptions of the Gupta period, around the 4th to 5th century CE. By relying on such previous work, Prinsep was able to go back even further into our past and read the inscriptions of the Mauryan period. “While the credit goes to him, there was a lot of fieldwork already done. So, it was evolutionary; the whole thing was deciphered backwards.”
Interest in languages
Raamesh’s own fascination with language started during his childhood, during the many years spent in different cantonments. Since his father was in the Indian army, he moved within the country frequently, encountering a new language every time his father was posted in a new place. “We learnt many languages this way…Punjabi, Konkani, Marathi…” says Raamesh.
Unlike in Europe, where almost all languages use the same Latin script, he adds that every new language usually comes with its own script. “I would learn the script alongside the language. That created an interest in the script,” says the autodidact, who taught himself around 25 scripts.
While the early part of his life was spent in science — he holds a Master’s degree in Biological Science from the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru and worked at CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory in Pune and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai — he moved away from science in 2007 and went into advertising. “My bread and butter come from digital marketing, advertising, writing for websites…all of that,” he says.
A few years ago, he rekindled his interest in epigraphy and archaeology, completing a certificate course in the latter from the University of Mumbai in 2015. In 2016, he joined INSTUCEN, where he not only teaches courses on epigraphy, manuscriptology, and various scripts but also leads heritage walks and trails in Mumbai. “The trust aims to support public archaeology…a response to our Whatsapp culture of sharing fake or made-up historical facts,” he says, pointing out that the past is what it is and will keep changing as new evidence crops up, and it is important to approach its study objectively.
Language politics
Raamesh believes that preserving and understanding diverse languages and scripts is important because it helps garner a better comprehension of language politics, which often crops up in this country, frequently resulting in violence.
“Bengaluru is no stranger to this,” he says, referring to agitations led by Kannada activists who worry about the loss of Karnataka’s language and culture. “When a language is lost, with it is lost a lot of local culture and knowledge,” he says.
For instance, many indigenous herbs, plants, and insects in Karnataka are not found elsewhere. “Since the words (for these unique things) that exist are in the Kannada language, if they disappear, that knowledge too will disappear.”
Additionally, every language offers its own way of seeing the world. If English is seen as the language of science and business, Urdu is often seen as the language of poetry, Sanskrit as the language of philosophy and so on, he says. “Every language comes with a flavour of its own,” believes Raamesh.
The course will be held between July 22 and 25 between 7.30 p.m. and 9 p.m. The registration fee is ₹1,200. Email parichay@intachblr.org for more details.

Find out what the Brahmi script is and explore its history. Understand the important characteristics of the Brahmi script and discover how it developed. Updated: 04/22/2023
The Brahmi script (Brāhmī; 𑀩𑁆𑀭𑀸𑀳𑁆𑀫𑀻) is one of the ancient scripts that was used in India, especially in the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent. The Brāhmī script is also the ancestor of many of the modern scripts used throughout India, including the popular Devanāgarī (देवनागरी लिपि) script used for most Indian languages, either alone or in combination with other scripts.

Nearly all the modern scripts of India, along with many other writing systems in Asia, are derived from the Brāhmīc script. Historians and linguists believe that the Brāhmī script developed as a variation on the Semitic Aramaic script, itself a descendant of the Phoenician writing system. People of the Indian subcontinent came into contact with Semitic peoples some time in the 7th or 8th century BCE. Regardless, its surviving uses are much newer, dating some time around the third century BCE, though some claim it is seen in the fourth century BCE.

The first phase of the Brāhmī script is known as Aśokan Brāhmī and it was used from about the 3rd century BCE to the end of the first century BCE. The third king of the ancient Mauryan Empire in India, King Ashoka (or: Aśoka), who ruled from c. 268 BCE to c. 232 BCE, left a number of inscriptions promoting Buddhism throughout the Indian subcontinent in both the Brāhmī script and the Kharoṣṭhī script. These scripts were used frequently for religious texts, especially Buddhist works. They both were seen as Holy Scripts, compared to other forms of writing used for secular purposes.
With these inscriptions being the earliest confirmed use of Brāhmī, and certainly the most widely known, the early phase of the script naturally was named after Ashoka. Aśokan Brāhmī was very angular, which made it easier to use in inscriptions, as Ashoka did. However, the next phase, Middle Brāhmī or Kushana Brahmi, became more rounded.

The Brāhmī script is not an alphabet, but an abugida. Alphabets represent consonants and vowels with their own characters, while an abugida represents consonants with a vowel attached. Some will also include new characters for new consonant and vowel combinations, while others will use special markings called diacritics to show a vowel change. Depending on the script, there may also be singular vowel characters for instances where a vowel exists at the start of a word, for example, without a preceding consonant.

One of the most important writing systems of the ancient Indian subcontinent is the Brahmi script (Brāhmī; 𑀩𑁆𑀭𑀸𑀳𑁆𑀫𑀻). It is the ancestor script for most of the writing systems used in India today, including the popular Devanāgarī script. The Brāhmī script, and many of its descendants, is an abugida, meaning that, unlike an alphabet, it does not represent each consonant and vowel separately. Instead, characters have an implied vowel partner; for Brāhmī, this default vowel is "a." Brāhmī was popular in religious literature, especially for Buddhist works throughout the Indian subcontinent.
The Brāhmī script evolved from the Semitic writing system for Aramaic around the 7th or 8th century BCE. However, the first (surviving) evidence of it is from the 3rd century BCE in Aśokan Brāhmī. This name comes from the use of the script by the ancient Indian king, King Aśoka, who used Brāhmī for his proclamations about Buddhism in Northern India. Around the first century (BCE/CE), there was a noticeable shift, especially in the South, towards Middle Brāhmī or Kushana Brahmi, a more rounded script. This gave rise to scripts such as Malayalam and Sinhala. In the Northern regions of India, the original, angular Brāhmī remained popular and eventually became the Gupta script (or Late Brāhmī). This was used until the development of modern systems, such as Devanāgarī, by approximately the 7th century CE.

“From Agnimitranaka, son of Goti, a (Maharathi) great warrior, the gift of a lion pillar”

(Saka or Scythians or Se)

“King Vasisthiputa, the illustrious lord (Swami Shree) (Pulumavi) in the year 7th of summer the fifth fortnight and first day. On that day , a great warrior, Vasithiputa Somadeva, son of the great warrior of Okhalakiyas, Kosikiputa Mitadeva gave a village to the Sangha at Valuraka”

“ To the perfect! The king Vasisthiputa, the illustrious _Shree) Pulimavi in the year (of his reigh) twenty four, in the third fortnight of the winter months, the second day.

James Prinsep
