A lonely trail to the ruins of Visapur
- Visapur Fort was built between 1713-1720 CE by Balaji Vishwanath, the first Peshwa of the Maratha Empire. In 1818, Visapur was attacked and occupied. Considering the strategic importance of Visapur, both the north (Konkan) and the south (Deccan) gateways were blown up. Except for a few huts, nothing was left standing.

Bhaje village trail

This trek begins in Bhaje village. Follow the mud trail out of the village. This is mostly a flat walk. The fort walls are clearly visible from the trail.
After 4 km, the trail splits. The one to the left goes to Visapur, and the one to the right leads to Lohagad. Take the trail to the left. From here, the trail begins to ascend gradually. You'll notice arrows marking the path through the forest; follow these till you reach a hut. A stone placed here acts as a marker; it has the image of a horse painted in orange. Turn left here.
The trail through waterfalls (in monsoon) begins behind the green overgrowth at this turn. You will find water gushing down the stones as you trek up. In the summer, this part of the trail will have dry rocks. The trail here is shaded with tall trees.

Continue on this trail for 30–40 minutes, and you will reach the plateau on top. This is covered with lush greenery and moss in the monsoon and is barren in other months.
Explore the plateau to find small water tanks in caves and large water storage tanks, the flag, canon and bastion, Hanuman temple, various buildings (wadas), grinders used for construction, and other remains of the fort. Also catch views of Lohagad, Tikona, and Tung Forts, and the expressway. Walk on the inner edge of the fortification wall.

Patan village trail
Patan village is close to Lonavla. This route to reach Visapur is a little tricky. But for those who wish to do it on their own, keep certain landmarks in mind. First, when starting out from Patan village, keep the village to your left. You will see a number of trails here, so ask for help. Locals are approachable and will readily give directions.
This trail initially goes through a small forest and then comes to a dried up waterfall - if you are trekking post monsoon. Stick to this waterfall for the rest of the route. After 15-20 minutes, there is a bifurcation. The trail to the right goes to Visapur, and the one to the left goes to Lohgad. Take the one to the right.
After hiking for close to 40 minutes on this trail, you will come across a broken staircase. This staircase leads up to one of the entrances of the fort.
The total time you will take to reach the fort from Patan village should be 2 hours.
How to Reach the Base of the Trek
How to reach Bhaje
Drive down the Mumbai-Pune Expressway towards Lonavala; take the second exit for Lonavala on the expressway. Head towards Malavali station and then down to Bhaje village. There is a pay-and-park service here.
Alternately, take the NH48 and take the exit after Jain Temple and the JAVC campus. Continue straight to reach Malavali station. Then head straight further to Bhaje village.
Bus: Take an Asiad or ST bus from Dadar station and get down at the Malavali station. Use a shared auto (costing Rs 40 per person) or walk the 2.5 km down.
Train: Board the Intercity Train from Dadar at 7 am. (Ensure you book a ticket that can be bought a day prior, no need to reserve days in advance.). A general ticket from Dadar to Lonavala costs Rs 60.
Get off at Lonavala station. Here you have two options:
- Rickshaw: Hire a rickshaw from Lonavala station to Malavali station (a distance of 12 km) at Rs 150 for three seats. If you want to continue to Bhaje village (another 4 km) in the same rickshaw, negotiate rates accordingly.
- Local train: Board the local train, which runs between Pune and Lonavala every hour. Tickets will cost Rs. 5, and you will reach Malavali station (the first stop after Lonavala) in 5 minutes.

- Like most people trekking to this fort, the best part is to walk via lush green forests to reach this preserved treasure of ancient history.
- The Bhaje Buddhist Caves are a piece of art and are worth exploring since they are on the way to the Summit. By climbing around 200 steps you can reach into these 22 rock-cut caves that date back to the 2nd century BC.
- The remains of the old Mahadev Temple serve as a window into the rich history of the Maratha and how they worshipped Lord Shiva and followed his preaching.
- There is a vast horse-driven flour mill with its grinding stone still in place reminding us of how many people lived in this kingdom indicating the amount of food required to be ground.
- The magnificent Lohagad fort conquered by The Great Chhatrapati Maharaj Shivaji but was given during a treaty is a massive structure and can be visited via a small detour on the same path.
- While climbing Visapur Trek one can see the Pawna Lake and Dam and upon reaching the top a beautiful view of the sun is all one needs to relax after this hectic trek. Availability of Food and Water: Since it is a small village fort there are simple Maharashtrian dishes like Misal Pav, Vada Pav, and Puri-Bhaji available only till Bhaje Village. After that, it is a mountainous trek and hence no food is available. There are no resources for water and hence you have to carry your own 2 Litre water bottle.
How to reach Visapur Fort:
The Fort located closest to Malvali station is easily accessible by train, road, and air. It is well connected to the Mumbai-Pune route and can be easily accessed via road as well.
- By Rail: The closest railway station, Malvali is about 10 km from the fort and one can easily get autos to get to the fort from the station. There are daily trains from Pune, Lonavala, and Mumbai stations to reach Malvali. This is the easiest and safest way to reach the fort and is opted for by most trekkers. The nearest major train station is Lonavala and one can also travel from there.
- By Road: Its proximity to the Mumbai-Pune highway makes it easily reachable from Paud via Kolvan and Dudhiware Khind. Those who want to enjoy a long drive on their two-wheelers or four-wheelers can also reach here via their vehicle which is an easy-to-find route. It takes about 1.5-2 hours to reach Visapur fort from Pune and 2-2.5 hours from Mumbai via major highways.
- By Air: For trek enthusiasts willing to travel from different cities to this unique waterfall trek the nearest airport is Pune airport and you can hire a personal taxi or vehicle from Pune. It takes about the same time to reach as via road from Pune. The proposed nearest airport will be Navi Mumbai International airport in the coming future. Bedse Caves – A Unique Buddhist Vihara
Bedse Caves are located in the Maval taluka of Pune district in Maharashtra. The caves are excavated on the eastern side of a hill range overlooking the valley of Pawana. The old name of the settlement was Marakuda as found in an inscription. The group has nine excavations consisting of a few chaityas, a vihara, and a few water cisterns.
N L Westergaard was the first modern explorer to notice the caves. He wrote a letter to James Bird and the latter published it in the Journal of the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1844.1 Westergaard provided an eyewitness account of the caves. The most useful information in his account was that the pillars inside the apsidal chaityagrha were covered with paintings. However, he says those were so indistinct that nothing could be made out. The next short account was from John Wilson who included these caves in his memoirs of cave temples of western India. Wilson informs that with the approbation of the then Government of India, a commission was formed by the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, “Bombay Commission”, to make preliminary inquiries about the situation, extent, and general character of the antiquities which are subject of investigation.2 The notes prepared by Wilson were under the same commission. In addition to providing measurements of these caves and directions to reach them, his account also fills in various gaps in the earlier account of Westergaard. An article about these caves was also published in the Oriental Christian Spectator in 1861. The writer mentions finding fragments of timber lying on the floor of the chaityagrha.3
A. A. West presented a paper on the inscriptions of the site in 1864.4 He did not provide the full translation of the inscriptions but only the fragments. James Fergusson was the first renowned architect and archeologist to write about the Bedse cave.5 He says the Bedse chaitya shows considerable progress towards lithic construction amongst its contemporary excavations. It has nearly all the features of a well-designed chaitya cave. He compares the pillar capitals with crouching animals to the Persian (Persepolitan) pillar capitals of two addorsed animals. Jas. Burgess covers the caves in detail in his magnum opus on the cave temples of India which he co-authored with James Fergusson.6 He says the caves were locally known as Karunj-Bedsa because of the names of the two villages at the foot of the Supati hill where these excavations were made. The caves were at a height of 300 feet above the plain and 2250 feet above sea level. Apart from the dimensions and other features of the caves, the important information in his account was related to paintings and woodwork. Burgess mentions that all the woodwork mentioned by Westergaard and the writer of the Oriental Christian Spectator has since disappeared. Fragments of paintings could be traced till as late as 1871, however, a local officer under the idea of cleaning this fine cave had the whole whitewashed and obliterated all the paintings. Later in 1883, Burgess also published the inscriptions of these caves.7 Once the caves were known to the scholar community, these started being featured in various monographs on the rock-cut Buddhist shrines, and various travelogues.8
The first comprehensive study of the cave among the large repertoire of Buddhist rock-cut monuments came from Vidya Dehejia. She plotted the known Buddhist cave sites on a map concluding that the early Buddhist caves extend from Karadh in the south to Ajanta and Pitalkhora in the north, with extensions to Saurashtra in the west. This area comprises some twelve principal sites and the total excavations exceeds one thousand. These are cut into the hills and valleys of the Western Ghats, the Deccan Trap basalts. The abundance of underground springs and Deccan Trap basalt provided a convenient rock-cutting choice, leading to numerous excavations. These excavations were located along the ancient trade routes, particularly the ones connecting the ports to important inland towns. Bedse lies on the branch that climbed the Sava Pass or the Kuruvanda Pass near Lonavala.9 She places Bedse caves between 50-30 BCE.10 The next impressive attempt was from S Nagaraju who attempted to place the caves among the repertoire of the Buddhists based on architecture, style, and paleography. He dates the complex to the early part of the first century BCE.11 An important study was carried out by Walter Spink attempting to redate the chaityagrha at Karle. Various scholars have dated the chaityagrha at Karle to the first century BCE. Spink raises some serious doubts and suggests that dating must be brought up to the second and third decades of the second century CE. As inscriptions of Nahapana and his followers are found on the interior pillars at Karle, this proves that the excavation was ongoing when Nahapana conquered the region and took Karle chaityagrha as the first monument for donations and patronage. He takes forward the same approach to Bedse suggesting it was excavated in the middle or later years of the first-century CE.12
Cave No 1 – This cave is an unfinished chaityagriha of circular shape. It measures 3 meters in diameter and 1.75 m high.13 In the center is a stupa of circular plinth. A rectangular mass of rock connects the top of the stupa plinth and the ceiling. The doorway is plain and is preceded by an open porch. The cave is bereft of any decoration and all the rough and coarse surfaces, suggesting the work has been stopped in the middle. Nagaraju opines that the space between the stupa plinth and the ceiling was insufficient to carve out the remaining parts of the stupa, i.e. anda (dome), harmika, etc. This probably explains why the cave was left unfinished.14
Cistern No 1 – To the north of the above cave, a water cistern with a square opening is cut into the floor of the rock.
Cave No 2 – This cave follows the same style as Cave No 1. The front portion and the ceiling have collapsed however the circular chamber and its stupa are intact. The stupa has a cylindrical plinth measuring 1.4 m in diameter at the base and 1 m in height.15 At the upper rim of the plinth runs a rail-pattern railing. A 3 feet high dome rises above the plinth. The four holes on its top were probably meant to support a wooden harmika. It appears that Cave No 1 was originally planned to be finished as Cave No 2, however, Cave No 1 was abandoned and thus Cave No 2 was excavated.
Inscription – There is a single-line inscription on the back wall. It reads, “The stupa of … Gobhuti, a hermit living in the forest and mendicant who dwelt on Marakuda [Marakuta]: caused to be made by his pupil, the devoted Asalamita [Ashadhamitra].” Burgess suggests Mara might be the hill’s name in the olden days.16
Cistern No 2 – To the north of Cave No 2, another water cistern with a square opening is excavated.
Inscription – A three-line inscription is engraved on the back wall of the cistern. It reads, “The meritorious gift of Samadinika the Mahadevi (princess), the Maharathini, daughter of the Mahabhoja and wife of Apadevanaka.”17
Cave No 3 (Chaityagrha) – It is the principal excavation at the site and the best and biggest. As the rock was slightly sloping, the architects had to make a deep excavation to obtain a plain and straight facade. This deep excavation resulted in a passage, 12 m long and 2.5 m wide, in front of the chaitya. The passage is open and about 9 m high.18 The excess rock mass on either side of the passage is not removed hindering the full and proper view of the front facade of the chaitya. The reasons behind it were unknown as it is the only excavation where such a scheme was implemented. All other chaitya caves excavated in the Western Ghats are without a passage. One probable reason would be that as the extra rock mass does not interfere with the plan and constituents of the chaitya thus it was left to save effort and time.
Passing through this passageway, a visitor is led to the front of the chaityagrha looking directly into the veranda and the front screen. The veranda has two huge columns and two pilasters. The base of the columns is a pot-shaped base mounted over a stepped pedestal. Above it rises an octagonal shaft that terminates with an inverted bell capital. The lotus petals on the bell capital are very distinctly carved. The bell capital has a round bulbous cushion (amalaka) within a square frame supporting a stepped abacus. Over the abacus are various crouched addorsed animals with riders, male or female. Among the animals are found elephants, horses, and bulls. Dehejia says the grace and ease with which these animal figures are portrayed reveals a technical accomplishment certainly equal to and perhaps somewhat in advance of the carvings on the Sanchi gateways. She opines that the Bedse architects would have visited Bharhut, Bodh Gaya, and Sanchi, the important centers of stone carving in those days. Perhaps this was responsible for the innovation of tall, slender columns with elaborate capitals.19 The Ashokan column at Sanchi may have inspired the architects to introduce a bell capital with a stepped abacus supporting animal-and-rider crowning figures.20
The veranda is 3.7m deep and 9.2m wide.21 There are two cells each on the lateral sides of the veranda. The cells in chaitya are an unusual feature as chaityas were made for congregational purposes without any residential quarters. The base of the rear wall has vedika (rail-pattern railing) decoration. This decoration motif is also found above the lintels of the doorways and windows. The main doorway measuring 90 by 180 cm is in the center.22 A lattice window is provided on the left and the corresponding space on the right has another smaller entrance, 68 by 167 cm. Chaitya arches surmount these doors and the lattice window. A large chaitya arch, open from the front, is surmounted occupying the space of the central nave inside the hall. The side arms of this large chaitya arch terminate in the middle of the arches surmounting the lattice window and the smaller entrance. This large open chaitya arch allows enough light to highlight the stupa inside the hall. The soffit of these arches is cut with dentils resembling wooden rafter ends. The rest of the space is decorated with meshes of chaitya arches and vedika patterns in three horizontal series lying one above the other. This gives an impression of a four-story structure with each story separated by a vedika railing. The style and decoration scheme of the front is continued on the lateral sides.
The inner apsidal hall is 13.5m long and 6.25m wide. It is divided into a central nave and two side aisles by two rows of pillars. The nave is 3.1m wide and the aisles are 1 m wide. There are twenty-six pillars, thirteen in each row. Except for the two pillars near the front doorway, the rest are all plain octagonal shafts about 3m in height. The roof of the aisles is quadrantal and the nave is barrel-vaulted. Nagaraju asserts that the chaityagrha is remarkably perfect in architectural design. The proportions between the various parts are mathematically arranged and meticulously executed to be an achievement laudable in rock excavation.23 The stupa at the apsidal end has a circular plinth of 2m in diameter. The plinth has two levels, the lower level rises for 1.5m and the upper level to another 1m. The base and rims of the plinth’s levels are decorated with the vedika pattern. The hemispherical dome above the upper plinth is about 1m in height. The harmika has two tiers and is surmounted by a bracket composed of five horizontal plates of increasing dimensions. The uppermost plate has a circular hole in its center. In the hold is inserted a yasti, made of wood, with a hump of calyx design on the top.
A few innermost pillars next to the stupa have various Buddhist symbols engraved on their top portion. Among these symbols are found an eight-spoked dharmachakra mounted over a pedestal, triratna, shrivatsa, lotus, etc. Usually, these symbols correspond to the Ashtamangala symbols of Buddhism. However, at Bedse we have a unique symbol of swirl found here which is not mentioned in any ashtamangalas. A few scholars have identified this symbol as chakra.
Inscription – A single-line inscription is found over the door of a cell at the right end of the veranda. It reads, “The gift of Pushyanaka, son of Seth Ananda, from Nasik.”24
Cistern No 3 – It is located a little north of the above chaityagrha. It has a rectangular opening.
Cistern No 4 – This underground water cistern is located further north of the above cistern. The rock between cisterns no 3 & 4 has been carved out with provisions of seats in different recesses. These recesses are not spacious enough to provide for a residential cell rather these appear to provide a space for seating overlooking the river valley down.
Cave No 4 – This cave has a cell in the front and back. It is excavated at a higher level than other caves.
Cave No 5 (Mahavihara) – This was the main residential complex at the site. It has a pillarless apsidal hall with several cells hewn in the inner walls on the three sides. The hall is 5.5m wide and 9.9m deep.25 There are nine cells inside the hall. A few cells have two beds on opposite sides and a few only have provisions for one bed. A chaitya arch surmounts the cell door frames. Vedika (rail pattern) decoration is provided at two levels, the first level is at the base of the chaitya arches and the second level connects the apex of these arches. The soffit of the arches has dentil resembling the wooden rafter ends. The space between the lintel and the chaitya curve is filled with rosettes or a basket motif within a semicircular space topped by a railing. The walls between the two cells have false windows. Four cells are provided next to the entrance to the hall, two on either side.
The crude image of a goddess carved outside a cell is worshipped as Yamai. The tradition ascribes that the four brothers who started the excavation at Bedse were scared away by the goddess to Bhaja and later to Karle.26 Nagaraju opines that this vihara was constructed in two stages as evident from the variations in decoration and the fact that the front cells are a bit receded from the alignment of the inner cells and separated by wide jambs.27 The apsidal hall and its inner cells are coeval with the Chaityagrha at the site. The four cells at the entrance appear earlier. Their decoration is similar to a few earlier caves at Ajanta. The architects might have an idea to convert these existing four cells into a veranda on similar lines to the Chaityagrha.
Cave No 6 & Cistern No 5 – This cave is located further north of the above Mahavihara. It is a small cell measuring 1.8m by 1.2m. A water cistern is provided next to its entrance.
Observations:
- Site Selection – Western Ghats is dotted with numerous Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain excavations. Ports on the western coastline of India had been engaged in trade with the Greeks, Romans, and Arabs for centuries before the modern era. These ports were connected to the inland towns via road and inland waterways. This commercial and industrial prosperity resulted in the cultural and financial development of ports and towns. The passes on the Western Ghats served as the natural trade routes. Numerous Buddhist sites were developed on these various trade routes. Bedse is situated on the Kondane pass, an opening from the Deccan to the coast. The other important Buddhist centers lying on this pass are Karle and Bhaja.28 Mandad port in the Raigad district was connected to inland settlements via an ancient route passing through Kuda, Karle, Bhaja, Shelarwadi, and Bedse. Many large and significant Buddist excavations are found on this route suggesting it was a busy route frequented by traders and monks.29
- Dating – Earlier scholars have dated these caves based on the paleography, style, and architecture in comparison to other contemporary sites. The generally accepted dating for these caves is the first century BCE. However, Spink argues that this dating needs to be brought up by at least two hundred years. He suggests that these caves were excavated during the middle or later decades of the first century CE. His primary argument lies in the inscriptions of Nahapana found in Karle caves suggesting that the Karle cave was excavated sometime during the early first century CE. This argument is still not widely accepted among scholars.

As you know monsoon is the best time for Trekking, it was monsoon and many people were Trekking around Pune, We were looking for an offbeat location to avoid the crowd and came up with the Kailasgad option.
What's there in Kailasgad Fort ??
Kailasgad
fort is located in Mulshi, near backwater of Mulshi Dam. There is
hardly anything to see on the fort but the trail, the Mountains and the
Waterfalls on the way make a dream come true day.
How to Reach Kailasgad ?
To
reach Kailasgad Fort, the route is Pune - Chandani Chowk - Pirangut -
Mulashi - take Right at Nive Bus Stop - Vaduste Village - park car at
Mountain Pass (Khind)
Seeing the above route I came up with a plan in which I can cover 4 beautiful Spots, which given below.
1) Palse Waterfalls (Beautiful but Crowded place, so reach very early)
2) Andharban view Point (Amazing place)
3) Kailasgad Fort
4) Nivhe Waterfalls (Less known Place)
Pune - Kailasgad Fort (Total Distance: 150km):
To
avoid the Traffic we woke by 5AM and left Pune by 6AM. It was rainy
season, it was all greenary around but it was not raining, The weather
was perfectly set for trekking conditions. Dark clouds, and cool breezes
made our journey more refreshing.
We reached our First Destination
Palse Waterfalls, there were harly any people around, we had our
breakfast with sweet corn and tea, had some clicks at the Waterfall and
left for Andharban view Point.
Wheres the Andharban view Point ?
Just
take a first right turn from Nive Village and move on for around 6km,
left side you will see beautiful mountains covered with fog, cool breez,
Valley, Water streams coming down the mountain, yes that's the
Andharban view Point.
We reached here within an hour, again the place
was crowd free, combination of Fog, Wind and Water streams made it more
amazing, we had few clicks there and left for Kailasgad.
To reach
Kailasgad, move straight from Andharban view Point cross the Vadutse
Village and go ahead till you see an electric DB on your left side,
there you will see the small board of Kailasgad with some details. There
we parked our car and started the beautiful Trek.
Trek begins with a
Small hike on Hill and the same Hill is connected to Kailasgad. The
route is narrow with exposed to the valley on your left side. The route
was bit slippery but manageable. It takes around 1 to 1.5 hour to reach
the top of Fort. If you want to enjoy the beauty of the trail rather
than Fortification then this is the perfect offbeat trekking place.
The trail to Kailasgad Fort
While
climbing, you will come across a small monsoon waterfall (It is only
inflowed during Rainfall). Just take right side direction rather than
crossing water stream to continue to reach on the top. Route marks are
not clearly visible which may mislead you.
When you reach top You can see the Swaraj flag on the fort.
View of Backwater and mountain range is simply breathtaking.
Largest or Maximum view of Mulshi backwaters is possible only from Kailasgad
The expert believes that fort was built during Saatvahan era and No fortification is available on the fort.
You
can see some ruined rock structure which looks like a ruined house.
There is Shivlinga carved in Stone at the end of the fort.
No signs of war found in history, but it's said the once Shivaji Maharaj had visited this Fort.
We
had our packed lunch under the shadow of Swaraj Flag, spent some time
in exploring the beautiful mountain which had semicircular bushes all
over it and Backwaters of Mulshi Dam made it more picturesque.
We begin our returned journey and climb down in 30-40 Min. It is a short trek.
After
this we routed our journey to last location, i-e Nive Waterfalls, this
Waterfalls is less known so you will harldly find anyone around.
In
the background you will see water stream coming from Mountain and that
contributing to this Waterfall, the view is very picturesque and
amazing.
We enjoyed playing in this waterfall and left back to Pune.
Kailasgad is less known, no crowd and just amazing, this is enough to make a life long memory.

उगम पावणार्या मुळा नदीवर मुळशी धरण बांधलेले आहे. या मुळा नदिच्या
खोर्यावर तसेच पुण्याहून ताम्हणी मार्गे कोकणात उतरणार्या घाटमार्गावर
लक्ष ठेवण्यासाठी कैलासगड किल्ल्याची निर्मिती करण्यात आली होती. किल्ल्याच
स्थान आणि आकार पाहाता हा टेहळणीचा किल्ला होता. लोणावळ्याहून भुशी डॅम,
INS शिवाजीला जाणार्या रस्त्याने पेठ शहापूर - भांबुर्डे - मार्गे पुढे
जात असतांना भांबुर्डेच्या पुढे उजव्या बाजूला डोंगररांग तर डाव्या बाजूला
मुळशी धरणाच्या पाण्याचा फ़ुगवटा आपली साथ संगत करत असतो. या डोंगररांगेत
सवाष्णी घाटावर लक्ष ठेवणारे तैलबैला, घनगड हे किल्ले आहेत. याच रस्त्यावर
असलेल्या वडुस्ते गावाच्या पुढे कैलासगड किल्ला आहे. मुंबई आणि पुण्याहून
हा किल्ला एका दिवसात पाहाता येतो. |

| किल्ल्यावरील टाक्यावरून हा
किल्ला सातवहान काळात बांधला असावा असे वाटते. ऐतिहासिक कागदपत्रात या
किल्ल्याचा उल्लेख इसवीसन १७०६ मध्ये शंकरजी नारायण सचिवांनी हणमंतराव
फ़ाटकांना लिहिलेल्या पत्रात मिळतो. |

| पहाण्याची ठिकाणे : | |||
| लोणावळ्याहून
वडुस्ते गावात पोहोचल्यावर , तोच रस्ता पुढे ताम्हणी घाट आणि मुळशी मार्गे
पुण्याकडे जातो. या रस्त्याने एक किलोमीटरवर एक खिंड आहे. या खिंडीत
डाव्या बाजूला म्हणजेच धरणाच्या बाजूला एक ट्रान्सफ़ॉर्मर आहे. तर उजव्या
बाजूला कैलासगड असलेल्या डोंगराची धार खाली उतरलेली आहे. या ठिकाणी किल्ले
कैलासगड उर्फ़ घोडमांजरीचा डोंगर अशी पाटी लावलेली आहे. या टेकडीवर
जाणार्या मळलेल्या पायवटेने आपण १५ मिनिटात टेकडीच्या माथ्यावर पोहोचतो.
येथून मुळशी धरणाच्या पाण्याचा फ़ुगवटा व्यवस्थित दिसतो. पुढे असलेली दुसरी
टेकडी थेट किल्ल्याच्या डोंगराला भिडलेली आहे. हि टेकडी उजवीकडे आणि दरी
डावीकडे ठेवत १५ मिनिटात आपण टेकडीच्या माथ्यावर पोहोचतो. टेकडी जिथे संपते तिथे किल्ल्याच्या डोंगराचा सरळसोट कडा खाली उतरलेला आहे. त्यामुळे किल्ल्याचा डोंगराला वळसा घालून डोंगर उजवीकडे आणि दरी डावीकडे ठेवत १५ मिनिटात आपण किल्ल्याच्या माथ्यावर पोहोचतो. येथे उजव्या बाजूला पठार आहे. त्यावर एक भगवा झेंडा लावलेला आहे. या पठारावरून दूरवरचा प्रदेश दृष्टीक्षेपात येतो. पठाराच्या विरुध्द बाजूला एक छोट टेकाड आहे. त्यावर चढण्यापूर्वी डाव्या बाजूला एक खाली उतरणारी पायवाट दिसते. या अवधड वाटेने ५ मिनिटे उतरल्यावर आपण कातळात खोदलेल्या गुहा टाक्यापाशी पोहोचतो. या टाक्यात खांब खोदण्याचे प्रयत्न केलेले दिसतात. पण दगड ठिसूळ लागल्याने काम अर्धवट सोडले असावे. टाक पाहून परत पठारावर येऊन डावीकडच्या टेकाडावर चढून गेल्यावर उध्वस्त घरांचे काही चौथरे पाहायला मिळतात. पुढे किल्ल्याच्या टोकाकडे जातांना डाव्या बाजूला एक दगडांची भिंत घातलेली दिसते. त्याच्या आत कातळावर कोरलेल षिवलोंग आहे. इथे आपली गड प्रदक्षिणा संपते. येथे आपल्याकडे दोन पर्याय असतात. आल्य मार्गाने खिंडीत उतरायच किंवा शिवलींगाच्या पुढे असलेल्या टोकावरून उतरणार्या पायवाटेने खालच्या रस्त्यावर भादसकोंडा गावाच्या दिशेला उतरायच. भादसकोंडा गावाच्या पायवाटेने खाली उतरल्यावर वडुस्ते - ताम्हणी रस्त्याच्या कडेला वाघदेवाचे मंदीर आहे. तेथुन वर चढुन गेल्यावर एक नैसर्गिक गुहा आहे. ती पाहून डांबरी रस्त्याने आपण १० मिनिटात खिंडीपाशी पोहोचतो. | |||

लोणावळ्याहून भुशी डॅम, INS शिवाजीला जाणार्या रस्त्याने पेठ शहापूर - बा -
मार्गे वडुस्ते हे किल्ल्याच्या पायथ्याचे गाव गाठावे. लोणावळ्यापासून
वडुस्ते गाव ५१ किमी अंतरावर आहे. लोणावळे - वडुस्ते अशी एसटी बस आहे. पण
या मार्गावर इतर रहदारी फ़ारशी नसल्याने. खाजगी वहानाने गेलेले चांगले.
लोणावळ्याहून वडुस्ते गावात पोहोचल्यावर , तोच रस्ता पुढे ताम्हणी घाट आणि
मुळशी मार्गे पुण्याकडे जातो. या रस्त्याने दोन किलोमीटरवर एक खिंड आहे. या
खिंडीत डाव्या बाजूला म्हणजेच धरणाच्या बाजूला एक ट्रान्सफ़ॉर्मर आहे. तर
उजव्या बाजूला कैलासगड असलेल्या डोंगराची धार खाली उतरलेली आहे. या ठिकाणी
किल्ले कैलासगड उर्फ़ घोडमांजरीचा डोंगर अशी पाटी लावलेली आहे. येथुन एक
तासात गडावर पोहोचता येते. पुणे-मुळाशी-ताम्हणी मार्गे कैलासगड ७८ किलोमीटरवर आहे. पुणे मार्गे येतांना भादसकोंडा गावाच्या पुढे कैलास गडाची खिंड आहे. | |||

We had breakfast break at JP’s food court, Mulshi village. We reached at Base soon and parked a vehicle on the road. There is Signboard which indicates the way to Kailasgad Fort.

Kailasgad Fort - Five Hills Series

How to Reach: Near Waduste village which can be approached via Tamhini Ghat or Lonavala - Amby Valley way.
History: Not much information is available about this fort.
Kailasgad Fort is a hill type fort located near the source of Mula river surrounding the Mulshi dam. It can be reached via Tamhini Ghat or via Lonavala from Pune. Waduste/Bhadaskhonda are the base villages for this fort.
There is a mountain pass just 2 KM ahead of this village from where the trail to the fort starts. You can also keep electric transformer as an identity in mind.
There are five hills in total that forms the part of this fort. We can see the road has been carved out from the first hill and just opposite the electric pole, path to fort starts.
It takes close to 15 minutes to cross the first hill. We get a panoramic view of Mulshi dam's backwater from here.
It takes another 15 minutes to climb up the second hill. Be careful, as after rainy season, the shrubs grow 7 to 8 feet tall. It is very important to be cautious while walking through this dense greenery.
After crossing the second hill, we need not climb the third hill. We have to walk around the hill keeping valley on the left and hill on the right side. Be careful here as the walkway is extremely narrow.
About 15 minutes of further walk brings up to this board. There are many such on the way which helps us track the correct path.
We need to climb up the third hill. There is a small rock patch here.
As we reach the top of third hill, on the right side, we can see a big pole which must have been used to hoist the flag.
We need to take left turn from here to cross the fourth hill. There are two ways from this hill. One that goes down towards water tanks and the straight to the top of fort.
I went down to see the water tanks first. There was no water stored in it. Also the water tanks work seem to be incomplete.
I came back to the same point again and climbed up for 5 minutes more to reach the top of the fort. We first see the Shiva temple under a small shed. Because of this temple, fort might have been named so.
At the other end of the fort, we can see the Saffron flag. A very large territory can be seen from here.
Apart from these, there is nothing much that can show the existence of fort here. Looking at the size on the top, this fort must have been used only to keep an eye on the surrounding areas.
Going ahead from the mountain pass, there is Bhadaskhonda village where we can see a natural cave. As we go right from the main road, we can see the Waghoba temple carved out in the rock.
Another 10 minutes of walk further towards the hill takes us to the natural cave. It is quite deep and also there is a small room on the right side.

Andharban, by its name, means a dark dense forest. It is a gradual descend trek, where you are already on height and you will descend till end. It is one of the most beautiful treks and lots of things to explore.

Meeting Point
For people travelling in their own vehicle:
You may reach the Campsite directly, Keep in mind the mobile network is pretty bad in the region. You can plan to reach campsite around 6:40PM.
- -OR -- you can reach the meeting point Dogra Food Mall Kasara, before 3.10 pm and follow our vehicles till Campsite.
For Kasara Pickup and Drop:
Those who have opted for pick up and drop from Kasara need to board
CSMT-KASARA local train at the time mentioned below from a station
nearest to you.
Train For Purushwadi Fireflies Festival Camping
Catch the Kasara Local train from the station nearest to you. Missing the train means missing the pickup, in such case you will have to hire a taxi from Kasara to reach Purushwadi. Missing pickup does not qualify for any refunds.

Once the train reaches the station local jeeps will be waiting outside the station to take you to the campsite. The jeeps will halt at a dhaba for participants to freshen up and proceed to the campsite.
Schedule for Purushwadi Fireflies Festival
- The event leader will reach the campsite along with the train participants around 06:40 pm. Those coming by own vehicle are supposed to reach Purushwadi by 6.40PM
- We shall then have a short introduction once everyone has gathered at campsite.
- You can freshen up, and then we will be allocating tents to everyone at 7:00pm.
- Relax at the campsite.
- Dinner will be ready by 09:30 pm.
- Post dinner we shall go for a walk around 10:30 pm to spot Fireflies. You will have to walk for roughly 20-25 min to spot the fireflies.
- You can choose to sit/lay down for the night enjoying the mesmerizing weather for as long as you want.

- 08.30 AM - Jeeps will move around 9:00am to 9:30am
- Those coming by own vehicles can start return journey towards Mumbai.

Tents Stay:
A Styrofoam mat will be provided in the tents to keep you comfortable. Tents will be allocated on 3 sharing basis, for
Twin sharing additional Rs.500 needs to be paid per couple. For
availing exclusive tent for just one person, additional 800/- would be
applicable. The tent will have a Styrofoam mat which is similar to yoga
mat. To add to comfort level, we suggest you to carry a bedsheet or
blanket to be put on the mat. Please not this is not a regular camping
event and the tents are very basic dome tents
In case of heavy rains, an attempt will be made to provide shelter for the entire batch in the forest/mountain region. Tents cannot be pitched in rains or if it's windy or the weather for the night is expected to be bad. The attempt to find shelter will purely on best-effort basis and availability cannot be assured. Do not book this event if you are not comfortable with such situations
Washroom:
Basic
village washrooms are available within a walking distance of 1 min.
This is a tribal area (Aadvasi area) so the washroom is pretty basic
Indian washroom. Bathing option is not available in this campsite.
Food:
During
fireflies festival is sourced from local "Adivasi" villagers, this is
basic home cooked food and is prepared by the villagers in the region. In past several years people have loved this food. But since lockdown got over, the expectations of people have become unreal and
food is still that same humble village food. Do not book this event if
food is your priority. Alternatively please carry packaged food along
with you if you are grumpy about food.
Transport:
The
bus/jeep will take you to the Camping location directly, there's no
trekking involved. Approximately distance from Mumbai is 165.3Km. and
from Kasara its approximately 70 Km. If you miss the pickup, no refunds
will be provided. You will have to hire taxi on your own and reach
campsite.
Traveling by Own vehicle:
You will
get the coordinator details and exact GPS location of the campsite in
the WhatsApp group. You are supposed to reach the campsite at 6.40Pm.
The region has bad mobile network and you can consider to catch up the
group at Kasara itself (refer itinerary) and follow the jeeps till campsite.
Driver: If
you are hiring a driver or driving the vehicle yourself , in either
case every individual person coming to the campsite has to be registered
as a participant and has to pay the charges. If you do not wish to pay
for your driver you can ask him to drop you and then come back to pick
you up next day.
Rain & Weather:
Rains
are expected to start from the month of June, during initial days the
soil soaks up most of the rain water as it has been try for several
months, as days pass by, the rain water starts flowing. If it drizzles
during the event it wont matter much, the fabric of tent is water
resistant. But in case of extremely heavy rains, or stormy weather, the
participants need to take shelter at a nearby shed. This Shed is a
village home comprising of a hall and two rooms, this shelter is only
for protecting from extreme bad conditions and its not a stay-option.
Please NOTE:
The main focus of this event is watching "Fireflies" and this is Not a Camping focused event.
Tents/Home-stay/dormitory stay is just a medium to provide shelter for
the night. Do Not book this event if you are not comfortable with such
situations.
If the weather is expected to be bad, accommodation will be provided in a homestay/dormitory/shelter location instead of the tents.
This is the Monsoon season and camping is best suited in
winter and summers when it's not too windy or rainy. If the weather goes
bad, accommodation will be provided in homestay/ dormitory/temp
shelter, etc. instead of tents, or maybe the tents will be set up at a
shelter location. Please do NOT book this event if your focus is on
luxury/comfort camping only. This is specifically a Fireflies-focused
event and due to weather conditions, all other things need to be handled
as per the best-suited option basis.
The event schedule, itinerary, group composition, and all operational aspects are subject to change without prior notice. In

but unavoidable circumstances may impact the operations.
Fireflies Sighting:
Fireflies
Glow only in weather condition suitable for mating. As we are currently
in transition phase of moving from Summer to Monsoon the weather is
completely unpredictable and can change within hours. Its not possible
to predict the weather in advance. Natural phenomenon like Rain, Wind,
Flowers, Fireflies, Clouds, Heat wave, Cool breeze, Humidity, etc. are
not in our control and we do not assure occurrence of any natural
phenomenon.
IMPORTANT:
Please do not book this

How to Reach Purushwadi Village, Maharashtra
- By Car: Drive along the Mumbai-Nashik Highway (NH-3) towards Igatpuri. From Igatpuri, continue on the Ghoti-Shirdi Road towards Sangamner. From Sangamner, take the road towards Rajur and follow the signs to Purushwadi Village. The journey by car typically takes around 5 to 6 hours, depending on traffic conditions and starting point within Mumbai. This route allows you to enjoy the scenic countryside along the way.
- By Train: Catch a train from Mumbai to Kasara Railway Station. Trains are available frequently from Mumbai CST, Dadar, or Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT). The journey by train takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Upon reaching Kasara Railway Station, hire a taxi or jeep to reach Rajur, which takes around 3 to 4 hours. From Rajur, take a local vehicle to reach Purushwadi Village, which takes about 1 hour.

Ans. Yes Kids are allowed. Age does not matter, It purely depends on how fit the kids are and how they have been raised in terms of adaptability to nature. One of my 3-year-old nieces can do all the Fireflies events at all the locations easily, but on the other hand one of my 16-year-old cousin can't even dare to think of going to any of the events listed on our website. His parents have raised him in such a way that now he is incapable of being in nature. This may sound harsh, but its ground reality.
Q: Purushvadi vs Bhandardara, which is better?
Ans. In terms of Fireflies sighting, Bhandardara has much more Fireflies as compared to Purushwadi. One can view millions of fireflies in Bhandardara due to its ecology being suitable for Fireflies Habitat. If we compare on basis of distance and charges, Purushwadi is far more expensive than Bhandardara, and Purushwadi is 187Km from Mumbai where as Bhandardara is 161 Km from Mumbai. Its important to note, the water stream that used to pass through Purushwadi has slowly drying up and that resulted in unfavorable living conditions for fireflies. In past 3 years visitors at Purushwadi could barely find a handful spots where they could spot fireflies. In the year 2024 the firefly sighting count was extremely low in Purushwadi region, and experts predict that during fireflies season 2025 the sighting will be reduced further.
Q: Is Purushwadi fireflies festival safe for solo participants?
A. Yes, mostly 30% of participants come up solo and blend in. Mischief Treks has a reputation of providing a memorable experience for each and every participant.

Q: Can we reach or leave early/late from the campsite?
A. Yes you can provided you have your own wheels, you can reach as per your comfort and leave the base whenever you wish. You can skip dinner/stay, and if you are ready to hit the road, you can return to your home or hotel. We don't have any restrictions or obligations when it comes to staying back at the base village. You can reach and leave as per your choice. The charges for participation will be the same for all participants. Skipping part of event will not qualify for special rates or discounts.
Q: Is mobile phone network coverage available at the campsite?
Ans. The network is poor and you may get intermittent network on Jio phones. Vodafone and Airtel networks are pretty bad in entire region.
Q: Is mobile phone charging facility available at the campsite?
Ans. No, mobile phone charging facility is currently not available. We advise you to carry a portable powerbank with you along with torches to be used at night.

Q: Is parking available at Purushwadi Fireflies location?
A. No, Official parking lot is not available at the Rajmachi Fireflies location. There is a open space where people park their vehicles. You may choose to park your vehicle at the given location at your own risk. Till date we have not encountered any issues related to parking.
Q: How is the stay arrangement at Purushwadi?
A.The Stay at Purushwadi is in tent, these are normal camping tents with no luxury. A Styrofoam mattress will be provided in the tents to keep you comfortable. Tents will be allocated on 2/3 sharing basis depending on the tent size available at the time of booking. You can carry anything that you might need for comfort like cushions, extra blanket etc.
Q: How to request for couple tent?
Ans. Once
you have made the payment and our team has verified your payment
transfer, one of out team member will get in touch with you and share
KYC form link. This needs to be submitted within three hours of
receiving the form.
After submitting KYC form, you can upgrade for twin sharing by stating your preference on same WhatsApp number.
Q. How many people will share the tent OR can we have a separate tent for ourselves?
Ans. We have tents of 3 different size. 2/3 person capacity tents, you can choose from any of these as per the number of persons coming along with you (depending on availability). Tent size is as per standard international norms for tents. The 3 person tent has dimensions of 200 x 200 x 130 cm. Purushwadi Fireflies is not a luxury camping event. A Basic tent setup will be provided for shelter. For Twin sharing additional Rs.500 needs to be paid per couple
Q: What is provided in meals/food at Purushwadi Fireflies Festival?
A. The meal will consist of veg and Jain food options. Rice, Chapati, Daal, seasonal veg, salad. For breakfast Poha and tea will be available. This basic home cooked food is prepared by local tribal villagers. Restaurant and Hotel food is not available at Rajmachi Fireflies Festival.
Q. Is drinking water provided at the Campsite?
Ans. Yes, normal tap water for drinking is provided free of cost to all participants.
Q: Is alcohol allowed during Purushwadi Fireflies Festival?
A. Using alcohol and smoking is strictly not allowed during Purushwadi Fireflies Festival. Consequences of breaching this guideline can be serious as this place has religious sentiments attached.
Q: Is there a washroom available at Campsite?
A. Washroom is available in the village for public use. Please be informed this is a basic toilet built in accordance to tribal village standards. Western style commodes are not available. There is no electricity in washroom and also for water one needs to refill the bucket before using washroom. If you wish to use the washroom at night, its advisable to carry torch.
Q: How many people will be participating per batch?
A. Final count of participants depend on the number of people booking, cancelling and rescheduling the event. Generally, the batch size is approximately 30-50 participants.
Q. Will the Fireflies event be canceled if it rains?
A. As you are already aware that June is a rainy-season month and the fireflies events are organized in this month with a clear understanding that it may rain. The Fireflies event will not be canceled. Refer Points to Note section above for further clarification

A. According to wikipedia and general understanding, Camping is not limited to staying in a tent. It can actually mean temporarily staying anywhere outdoors or in nature. It's all about immersing yourself in the great outdoors and enjoying the experience. So, whether you're sleeping in a tent, a camper van, a village home, a hammock, or even under the stars under open sky, it's all part of the camping adventure. It's about embracing nature and creating lasting memories wherever you choose to set up camp.

The Fireflies festival happens during end of may till mid June, and this is the worst time to go for overnight stay at such locations, But as the fireflies are visible only in this season the only thing we can rely upon is having shelter at village homes or tents. Tents are completely unreliable in this region due to heavy wind possibilities. Hence if the participants haven't read and understood the event details mentioned on this page, they might end up having unrealistic expectations from the organizers or they may expect this to be like the regular camping events. For example, at fireflies events food will be pretty basic, stay arrangement will be very basic, bonfire cant be done as smoke harms fireflies. Hence during enquiry phase we insist and almost force people to read-and-understand all aspects of Fireflies events Before-Booking. Yet, some people just scroll through and ignore the Important Points, Terms, FAQ section and About-Us section. We cant guess what you already know and what you don't. So, we insist that you need to at least once reading event details to avoid any omissions. Even after all the efforts to educate the participants, some of them still choose to be not aware of the facts and their unrealistic expectation causes lot of pain to the organizers.

Submitting incomplete/incorrect/fake details in the form or not submitting the form will make your booking invalid and no refund will be provided in such case.

Dategad Fort
Dategad Fort is a small fort located 75 kilometres South of Satara, in the Maharashtra state of India. This fort can be visited in a day from Satara. The nearest town is Patan. The base village is Tolewadi from where an easy trek of 45 minutes leads to the entrance of the fort.

Covid Safety Guidelines
- Before planning for any adventure activity, please improve your minimum physical fitness. Most of us have been at home for a lockdown period.
- Please convey your real medical conditions to Treks and Trails India while enrolling for the event.
- Kindly wear three-layered masks, N95. Carry an extra disposable mask with you. Please ensure all participants, leaders, staff, and general persons wear masks before interacting with them.
- Carry with your hand wash, sanitizer bottle, and clean your hands before touching food and objects.
- Cover-up wear full sleeves shirts and full pants, hiking shoes, caps, and face bandana over your mask. Covering up will help reduce exposure to the Covid19 virus.
- Bring your food and water with necessary cutlery like utility mug, fork, and spoon. Your mug can be used for cooking, eating, and drinking water. Carry your reusable water bottles; please don’t share with others.
- Cooperate for temperature checks, questions reading any symptoms, and oxygen level checks; these are done to help you limit the spread of the virus. All these checks will be conducted multiple times during the activities.
- Kindly do not register for the event or travel if you have come in contact with someone who has Covid19 in the last 14 days.
- If you have any symptoms like fever, dry cough, weakness, body aches, etc., at the time of screening. You won't be able to participate in the event. You will have to be evacuated on the medical condition and should report to the nearest healthcare center.
- Maintain a distance of six feet or more while sleeping at night. Incase distance is not possible, try sleeping in a criss-cross manner to avoid face proximity.
- Please bring your garbage back to the city and dispose of it in your bin.
- Consuming any alcohol, cigarettes, pan masala, tobacco, drugs should be avoided; they induce a lot of spitting, urinating, and passive smoke, which can be harmful for the general population.

- If any participant, trek leader test positive after returning from the event within 14 days of the Activity. They should maintain transparency and inform Treks and Trails India. How to reach to Kamalgad Fort
The Fort is easily approachable from Bhor or Wai in Pune. Tupenwadi the base village of the fort, which is close to Wai, about a distance of 30 km and 46 km from Bhor. Kamalgad Fort trek one way is around 6 km. Two hours of trekking one way.
Kamalgad Fort History
The fort architect is not documented or unknown. During the Maratha rule, Pandavgad, Kamalgad, and different fortresses in this region controlled by a Mokasaddar, meaning the administrator from Bijapur.
Ancient records drafted in the Modi script of the Marathi language introduce the fortress as Kattalgad. These records or documents are being studied by experts currently. Kamalgad surrendered to the British in April 1818 following opposition to the British company headed by Major Thatcher. British utilized the Fort to execute inmates of the war.
Places to see Kamalgad Fort
The single construction on the summit is a hole. Which is the remains of a well sunk directly into the rock, within the earth beneath, which yet has water? The hole is twenty feet deep. Criminals were given death sentences here after being placed on the sides of the Well wall on recesses. Criminals had two choices to starve or drown as part of their death sentence. Records indicate the hole created when quarrying local red stone known as geru available in this region.

Dategad: In the Satara area, Dategad is a little fortification close to Patan. The fort had strategic value before the arrival of the British. The entrance is a magnificent structure with a distinctive shape. Near the entryway, there are enormous statues of Lord Ganesh and Lord Hanuman. There is a step well on the plateau near the summit.
Vasantgad is a fort close to Talbid. The tomb of SarSenapati Hambirrao Mohite is what makes Talbid famous. The history goes back to the 12th century and was largely ruled by the Maratha Empire till 1818 AD.

HISTORY
Vasota fort renamed by the great king of Maratha Chatrapati Shivaji as Vyaghragad (व्याघ्रगड) is situated in the mighty Sahyadri mountain in Satara district. The fort was originally built under Shilahara King of Panhala Bhoja II (भोजराजा दुसरा) between 1178–1193. In the 16th century, it was ruled by Shirke and More who were appointed Sardars at Adilshahi dynasty. On 6 June 1660, the fort was seized by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja’s infantry while he was trapped in the fort of Panhala by Adilshahi Commander Siddi Jouhar.
Later in 1661, ‘Daroji’ a Sardar of the king Shivaji attacked Rajapur and arrested British officers Grifford, Revington, Farron and Samuel. The captured British officers were prisoned at Vasota fort.
In the later years, a battle broke out between Peshwas and Pant Pratinidhi of Aundh. Pant Pratinidhi was defeated in the battle by Bapu Gokhale who was leading from Peshwas’ side. The wife of Pant Pratinidhi Ramabai Telin, also known as Tai Telin took the possesion of Vasota fort in the absence of Pant Pratinidhi. She fought back against Bapu Gokhale for over eight months. Finally, Bapu Gokhale bombarded with heavy artillery from the old Vasota fort leaving no choise but to surrender for Tai Telin.

On 21 April, 1700 Aurangzeb took control of Ajinkyatara fort. Between 24 April 1700 and 15 May 1700 the fort was surrounded by Aurangzeb’s army. In this period of time the situation on the fort became tense. Shree Samartha Ramdas had brought Panchdhatu (Gold, Silver, Copper, Iron and Zinc) idols of Shree Ram, Laxman, Sita and Maruti from Tanjavar (Tamilnadu) which were placed on the fort. A brave and fearless Maratha sardar Parshuram Trimbak defended the fort with all efforts against Aurangzeb’s army. Later he took the Panchdhatu idols of from the fort and moved to the safest place – the Vasota Fort.
In 1818 the British attacked the fort with heavy artillery, destroyed major constructions on the Vasota fort and looted everything.
TODAY
The structures on the fort are badly damaged. Roots of trees and grass have taken over the old remains. An old Maruti temple without a roof is one of the structures that can be seen.
The fort also has one more beautiful temple of Mahadev built in stones. A safron colored flag flutters all the time on the temple. Grass has grown on roof of the temple but still it looks very pleasant.
One interesting remains on the fort is a lime grinder made up of stones. The circular stone was used for grinding to make lime mortar.
The path to the fort is not easy but not very difficult also. At some places steps are carved in stones whereas some places are stiff but with no steps to climb. This makes Vasota fort very popular destination among trekkers community.
A door carved from stones was once intacted now has fallen. Two such door frames are still exist but more or less in broken condition. Through these doors a narrow path leads to a Machi (माची).
Upon arrival on the machi a spectacular view of Shivsagar water reservior and the dense forest gives a mesmerizing experience.
The fort was mainly used as a prison due to its inaccessibility. The borders of the fort end abruptly in the deep valley. For this reason prisoners for their unforgivable crimes were thrown in the valley to death (कडेलोट). This punishment point is known as Babu Kada (बाबू कडा).
How to get there
The Vasota fort can be accessed with mainly two routes. One is from Konkan and other is from Ghat region. From Konkan a road goes from Chiplun to Chorwane which is a village close to Vasota. The second road from Satara to Bamnoli via Kaas plateau is more beautiful and convenient.
Bamnoli is a village on the east bank of Shivsagar reservoir. From Bamnoli it is neccessary to take a boat ride across the reservoir to Met Indavali (मेट इंदवाली) which used to be a village at the bottom of the fort. From here an hour long trek to reach out at the top is required. A boat and a guide are available on rent in Bamnoli.
It is not allowed to stay overnight on the fort as it is a reserved forest area. The trip has to wind up in one day. It is advisable to start the trek at Bamnoli in the early morning. Boats from Bamnoli are available from 08:00 am onwards. The fort is closed in the rainy season 15 June to 15 October. It is neccessary to carry food. Fresh water from naturally flowing spring is available on the trek route. No plastic should be left on the fort.
Since this is a reserved forest area, a permission must be taken in the forest office. The office is located at the starting point of the trek.
